We used: the Splatter effect (Effects -> Brush Strokes -> Splatter), the Points built-in plugin (Effects -> Built-in Plugins -> Points), the Layer Mask feature, the Oil Brush (Toolbar -> Artistic Brushes -> Oil Brush), and the Smoke Brush (Toolbar -> FX Brush -> Smoke Brush).
